4 WAYS TO BEAT SOCIAL MEDIA NEGATIVITY

Social media negativity can be a battle…

When you’re putting yourself out there on the internet, it’s impossible to completely avoid trolls who sit behind their computers and anonymously spread their negativity towards you.

The sooner you realise that you can’t make everyone happy, the sooner you can let go of those pressures and learn to just focus on doing what makes you happy. Everyone is built up differently, so it makes sense that not every person has the same views or opinions.

I started my @antoinettebonbon Instagram over two years ago and in that time, I have learned to not take these comments to heart or let it affect my creativity or my brand.

After an article featuring me and some other bloggers went a little viral in NZ, a bit of negativity followed that. I couldn’t stop reading the awful comments that were left by people who didn’t know me at all. It made me feel sick to my stomach. but I quickly realised reading those comments was not doing myself any favours and that the people that wrote those awful things were not worth my time or energy.

You don’t owe negative people any explanation.

Instead, understand that something must be going on in their lives where they feel the need to inflict their negativity on others, because whatever the mouth speaks is a reflection of the heart. Learn to always embrace the positive comments, accept constructive criticism from those you trust and ignore the trolls.

You may be thinking that it’s easier said then done, so I’m going to share with you my tips of keeping a positive mindset and how to overcome social media negativity:

IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S THEM.

When people comment mean and hurtful things it has absolutely nothing to do with you. It’s because of their own pain, and because quite frankly- they can’t stand to see someone else doing what they want to be doing, or being recognised for something that they wish they were recognised for. You never know what it could be that they are going through, so learn to empathize, move on and stay positive.

BLOCK OUT KEYWORDS OR EVEN ACCOUNTS

The great thing about social media is that you can block any negativity on your page. You can choose to block out keywords by using the app’s “Options” page, under “Comments”. I block curse words, sexual and derogatory keywords. My page is not a place for that type of content or words so I just simply don’t allow it. In some cases, I block accounts too. I find that some people just don’t give up! They sexualise content that is intended for showing my actual followers my outfits, and turn it into something that it is not… Therefore I just block those people, there not why I created this blog and certainly not why I create the content that I do.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM vs TROLLS

Constructive criticism is great! I have no problem with feedback saying if there’s a spelling mistake on my blog, or if a link is broken- that is what helps me grow and keep my site working correctly and makes for a better experience for everyone else. I always appreciate that feedback and respond if I’m able to make adjustments. I think it’s best to consider if the negative comment is offering useful feedback or if it’s just there to bring you down. If the point is to bring you down, the user is simply not worth your time or energy and you shouldn’t spend another second dwelling on that comment.

ALWAYS BE POSITIVE

I tend to live a very positive life, online and in reality. Life is too short to dwell on the small details and matters that don’t benefit you or your mindset. For me, positivity comes from a heart of gratitude and thankfulness. There is so much to be thankful for- if you’re reading this, you should be thankful that you live in a country where you can use the internet freely, or even that you have the eyes to read. At the end of the day, the world does not owe anyone anything! So being grateful for what you do have, is so important. Stay thankful about things that you may take for granted. Keep a positive attitude and always try to uplift those around you. If you have a positive mindset with a heart of thankfulness, you will attract positive people into your life

If you are still reading, and you (or someone you know) is dealing with online hate or bullying, please feel free to comment below…..lets discuss ways to deal with how you’re feeling. Too many young people are feeling alone, bullied and depressed due to the words of other people online, and it’s gone too far.

I’d love to form a discussion as to how we all can deal with hatred and help others who are struggling.
